Steinway Auto Repair - Eliminating bad odors in the AC System

At Steinway Auto Repair we regularly perform car AC repair in Queens . At times customers come in because there is a foul-smelling odour coming through the air conditioning vents. These bad smells can be caused by mold in the AC system as the result of clogging in the Air conditioning box drain or a leaking heater core.

To determine the cause of the smell, have a professional auto mechanic do the diagnosis as a leaking heater core usually cannot be detected easily.

First, we usually check the carpet beneath the dashboard on the passenger side for leaks from the Air Conditioning box. If it smells like mold or water is present, then the Air conditioning box drain may be clogged. If it smells like antifreeze, then the heater core may need to be replaced.

The Air Conditioning box drain will need to be inspected. The vehicle will need to be lifted up to view the drain. If there is antifreeze coming out of the drain, then the problem is a leaking heater core. Only water should be present. If the Air conditioning unit was on and no condensation was present, then the drain may be clogged and need to be cleaned out. Clogged drains are cleared by pressurized air.

So, if the problem is a heater core, then it will need to be replaced. A clogged air conditioning drain can be cleared. At Steinway Auto Repair, we do both for our customers as part of service and car AC repair in Queens

Once the problem has been corrected, the musty smell can be eliminated by cleaning and deodorizing. Here are the steps followed to clean and deodorize a vehicle air conditioning system.

The vehicle air conditioning is turned on and run at full blast, making sure that the recirculating system is turned off (there is a button with the symbol of air going around, make sure it is off). Fresh air will then enter the system and cool the car.

Next, a disinfectant is used to kill any mold growing on the air conditioning condenser. Either a household disinfectant or commercial grade can be used. While the car is running, the disinfectant is sprayed into the air conditioning intake system located just under the windshield. If there is a cabin filter, it is removed before spraying the inlet.

The next step is to take care of the AC vents inside the car. The AC system and fan are turned off, and sanitizer is sprayed into each of the interior AC vents and let sit for a while before restarting the AC system. After the adorementioned is completed, the cabin air filter will need to be replaced with a new one.

The cleaning and deodorizing can also be done as part of our car AC repair in Queens. At Steinway Auto repair, we can take care of all your car air conditioning and heating needs to make sure your AC is all tuned up and working and there are no bad odors coming from your AC system.
