Reasons Why Your Car Heater May Not Be Working
It’s now August and there is hot weather in most parts of the country. But Fall and the cold winter is not far away. Perhaps your car air conditioning is working perfectly, but what about your heat in the winter? You need the same type of performance from your car’s heater during the winter.
How does your car’s heater work? Engine coolant goes through your engine and absorbs heat. This heat is passed through the heater core. Think of this as a small radiator. A blower fan then pushes this warm air from the heater core through the car’s air ducts and into the interior of the car.
So, what is it that can cause your car’s heater to stop working? At Steinway Auto Repair, our experienced mechanics regularly perform car AC repair in Astoria. There are several reasons why your car’s heater may not be functioning properly and why you are not getting warm air in the cabin of your car.
First, it begins with the coolant. If your coolant is low, then there is nothing to absorb heat and pass it through the heater core. It is important to always change your coolant according to the manufacturer scheduled maintenance and have your professional mechanic check your system to make sure there are no leaks.
Secondly, the thermostat is responsible for regulating the flow of the coolant as the engine warms up. A non-functioning thermostat can be stuck in the open or closed position and not regulate the flow of the coolant properly. This can cause the engine either overeat or run cold, generating no heat.
Thirdly, the blower fan may not be working properly. If so, then warm air from the heater core will not be pushed through the air ducts and into the cabin.
A very simple problem may also cause your car heater not to work, and that is air pockets. Air pockets can prevent the proper flow of coolant through the heater core. Our mechanics who perform car AC repair in Astoria will flush out the system to get rid of the air pockets and then perform a pressure test to determine where air is entering the system.
It is very important to service your vehicle regularly and have the heating system checked out prior to the arrival of the cold weather. Those located in New York can visit Steinway Auto Re
